Reading
Please try and read with your child every night. Really focus on asking questions about their book as this will help them with their reading comprehension.
SPAG
To further the children’s understanding of spelling, punctuation and grammar we will be setting homework on SPAG.com.
Times Tables
Our main push this year in Y4 will be times tables knowledge and rapidity. Practising weekly tables and enjoying times tables rockstars (login details can be found inside home reading record) will support you and your child with learning this. Please use the link below for an excellent example of Y4 expectation.

Maths
To further the children’s understanding of mathematical fluency and problem solving we will be setting homework on maths.co.uk
Finally, if there are any questions or concerns please feel free to speak to any of us before or after the school day.
Year 4KM had a gorgeous day at the beach exploring. We carried out some fieldwork while using four-figure grid references.
This young boy worked very hard in geography today. In fact, he works very hard in every lesson. What a role model!
32Today, we were so happy to be reunited with a couple of our classmates who had been living in another city and were now back in Liverpool. They were welcomed with cheers, hugs and huge smiles by all their friends. Everyone showed kindness. So lovely to see!
59In Y4 we investigated one of our original questions ‘Are all liquids the same?’ We decided to have liquid races to explore this question. We raced washing up liquid, golden syrup, juice and cooking oil and discovered some are faster than others. We learned the word viscosity in order to describe this characteristic of liquids. We had so much fun doing so!
6
Thank you to everyone wo helped make our family picnic such a success, from the generous items on our community table to the fantastic Henna work in aid of Alder Hey hospital to the very generous sharing of food with staff, the day was fabulous.
After discussing what a refugee is and why this might happen to people, we thought about what we could give a refugee to help them survive their journey to safety or what we would take with us if we became refugees. The most important message we need to remember is a refugee is a person just like us and not just a label.
8
This year, the theme for Refugee Week is ‘Community as a Superpower’.
We created a backpack full of useful contents.
Y4 kicked of their States of Matter topic by observing dancing raisins. We discovered that all states of matter were featured in this observation and refined our explanations to be more scientific!
11
To understand how particles move in solids, liquids and gases, Y4 took to the outdoors to explore their movement using the parachute. We kept the particles tight with a little movement in solids, more movement in liquids to fit the space in a level surface and then we allowed the balls to fly everywhere for gases (this was our favourite bit!)
For Refugee Week, we talked about the different communities that we belong to. We also designed welcome baskets for people seeking asylum and refuge. We agreed that working together as a community is a superpower, and spreading kindness makes the world a better place.
57We really enjoyed looking at the old school logbooks last week. There was even an old trophy!
10
What a lovely picnic this afternoon! A big, huge thank you to all children, parents and staff for all the work and effort everyone has put in for our 150 year celebration. Thank you everyone for coming to celebrate this afternoon.
79We have loved learning about the history of our school since it was built in 1874. The past two weeks we have created timelines linked to the school’s History and the city of Liverpool, we have compared inspection reports from 1950 and 1964 with the present and we created old and new collages of Smithdown\Chatsworth Street school images.
11Year 3 recreated two very old pictures today. Another interesting look at the past of our school.
49Yesterday we celebrated Eid. They produced beautiful posters related to how Eid has changed over the last 150 years (linked to our 150th school celebration).
Using an OS Map and key we explored the area around Mount Snowdon in Geography.
10Thank you to AS Creatives for another great workshop all 150 years of Smithdown.

This morning we enjoyed using the seek app to find the names of native creatures and plants in our playground. Thank you to Lucy from Chester Zoo – a great start to our workshops!
23155We have been reading the story of Rumpelstiltskin. It is an old German fairy tale that was written many years ago. These children have worked so hard with their writing. I have been very impressed.
Today Y4 explored classification keys. We started by identifying characteristics that separate items. We practiced with liquorice first before applying to animals. Well done Y4!
Y4 have been working scientifically and explored how many dunks different types of biscuit could withstand in cold water. We recorded the amount of dunks each biscuit lasted. Some even made it to over 50!
18
After learning about deforestation, Y4 rehearsed the poem There’s a Rang Tan in my Bedroom. We learned about how forests are being cut down for palm oil production and focused on intonation in performing.
Y4 have been busy classifying animals according to their characteristics. We then used this knowledge in a Carroll diagram
18We used freeze frame and role play to show our learning based on the Victorians. This was our final lesson about the Victorian era.
Using drama and freeze frame we demonstrated significant events/ information from the Victorian Era: Irish families escaping the potato famine, a Victorian classroom, the invention of the Steam Train and living in a workhouse.

32A very important and informative message from Network Rail this morning. We learnt about the dangers on railways and how to stay safe.
This half term we are learning about the Victorians, but we don’t want to forget what we have learnt about our previous topic on the ancient civilisation of Baghdad. So, we played a game called Quiz, Quiz, Trade. This game involves asking questions to see how much we have remembered. We did really well!
209
Y4 have been busy exploring food chains in the environment. They have learned about the words consumer, producer and predator whilst recapping the process of photosynthesis.
In groups we compared an artist’s depiction of an area in Britain in the 1830s to how it had changed by
the 1890s. We discovered the changes in landscape were due to the Industrial Revolution. We then learnt about 7 key changes and ordered them by importance using a diamond nine activity.
27
Today we had a visit from Cruella De Vil who wanted to steal all of the Dalmatian puppies, luckily the classes were able to find all 101 of them and saved the school! What an amazing World Book Day 2025.
We learnt about the mythical Kraken and wrote a section of a non- chronological report in groups.
In groups we investigated a mystery object. What was it? What was it used for? Who would have owned and used it?
We worked hard to plan and write a non-chronological report. We worked in groups to write a specific paragraph.

A great morning exploring the relationship between multiples and three and multiples of six.
41This half term Year 4 have been focusing on what pixels are and pixel artwork in their computing lessons. Children looked at how the amount of pixels can impact the quality of images, how we can use binary code to create different pixel images, explored how to create pixel images and used their knowledge of excel to create a pixel based image of a mosaic that they created.
32Today we learnt how to keep ourselves and others safe from scams. We learnt what phishing meant and how to look out for it!
We explored scamming, what is meant by the word phishing and identified how to spot phishing scams such as spelling mistakes, suspicious email addresses, and personal information requests.
28Today Y4 explored the process of digestion by replicating their own model. It was a messy activity and we learned so much!
34
Y3 & 4 were lucky enough to work with students from LJMU to learn about sustainability.. We made bracelets out of plastic bags.

Year 4 designed their Roman inspired mosaics using technology before creating their own paper version.
We’re very excited to create our mosaics next week using tiles.

Well done to our year 3 and year 4 children who received a star of the week certificate this week. Well done everyone and keep up the great work!
Yesterday we created artwork using a colour wheel to discover complimentary colours. We then created mosaic patterns inspired by Gaudi’s Trencadis technique. The media we used was oil pastel.
A massive well done to all the children who received a star of the week certificate, a dojo badge or a TTRockstars medal for their efforts this week. What an amazing assembly! It was filled with happiness and rounds of applauses for our friends. 🥳
