To think about those who have lost their lives, we created some rhyming poetry. We based our poems on poppy fields, just like our art work.

Year 3 have started Remembrance Day by focusing on some art work that uses paint, fabric and stitching. When they are dry we’ll add some stitching on them to add colour and texture.

We have started World Nursery Rhyme week by learning 2 little dickie birds and singing Humpty Dumpty.

Our sun dance in English!

Today we had lots of fun working in groups to create a dance and role play as our character dancing in the rays of sun from our new book in English.
We listened to music about the sun and got into character.

Art and feelings

Starting our new book, we met a character that loves the sun light stroking her skin as she dances. We used this image to create our own to show how the sun makes the girl feel.

Fireworks

Today the children have enjoyed making fire work pictures using magic glue and glitter 😊

Our trip to Speke Hall

We went on a trip to Speak Hall today and had the best day ever!  We went in search of a friendly Giant at the outdoor nature trail. We found lots of giant objects and musical instruments .

Mini Medics!

What an amazing session with mini medics. We learnt all about DR ABC and first aid. The children loved it.

Years 5 and 6 Play Leaders

After receiving coaching from Coach Craig from LSSP, some of our Year 5&6 children have qualified in PALS – Leading physical activities during break times. They really enjoyed the course and can’t wait to get started!

Year 6 became Mini Medics today!

We had First Aid training and learnt about DR ABC, how to put someone in the recovery position, how to give CPR and we had fun with bandages!

Golden ball

To finish off this term, we played a game of golden ball. We continued with throwing, catching and how to move in team games.

Art final piece

Great effort on our final piece in art. Painting with scissors has been a great skill Year 3 have gained over the last term. No pencil markings, just free hand cutting. Everyone has become more confident with this technique and we have some amazing collages of some Ancient Egyptian art work.

Boys Football Competition

Our Y6 boys did really well today, they were model sportsmen who were great ambassadors for our school AND they qualified for the quarter finals too! Great job boys  👏👏👏

Diwali celebrations

We made some special Diwali sweets, Diwali cards and shared some Diwali foods . Happy Diwali to everyone!

This week we have enjoyed celebrating Diwali by making our very own Diya lamps using salt dough.

We are planning our instructions for how the Ancient Egyptians would have mummified a body to preserve it.

Reception’s first campfire

We had a fantastic time at our campfire. We toasted marshmallows, ate s’mores, sang songs and drank hot chocolate. A big thank you to all the parents and carers for attending.

Celebrating Diwali – Festival of Light

We really enjoyed our special workshop today learning all about the festival of Diwali. We listened to stories, made  patterns, dressed up and danced!

Diwali Celebration

We had a wonderful workshop this morning to celebrate Diwali and reinforce the work we have already done in Hinduism. We listened to a story, danced and created lanterns.

City Finalists!

How proud are we of our Year 6 girls, they won 6 out of 7 matches and have secured their place in the City Final! Lionesses in the making!

Field work at Sefton Park

Yesterday morning, we went for a story, map activity and craft activity at the Palm house. In the afternoon, we followed our map and and completed some fieldwork around Sefton Park. We spotted many human and physical features of the park and added how we felt in each place on our map.

Year 3 archaeologist!

We all became archaeologists for the afternoon excavating and finding ancient Egyptian artefacts. We spoke about what we learn from the things that can be found, which are thousands of years old.

Sketching Ancient Egyptian Art

We have looked at sketching parts of a chosen picture to focus in on different sections. We are getting ready for next week, when we’ll be recreating our chosen picture using the painting with scissors technique.

Anti-Racism Session

We had a great session with Loti, talking about how we can be different but are still all humans. We spoke about accepting each other and living alongside one another, which can make us stronger.

Roman Trip to Chester

Year 4 had a wonderful day at the Deva Roman Experience in Chester. We collected our shields and weapons before stepping back in time to Roman Britain. We walked the streets of Chester and battled with our ‘enemies’ The children learned a lot of new facts about The Romans, including what they ate and how they went to the toilet. The children loved it!

Year 2 Football Stars

We couldn’t be prouder of our Year 2 boys. They played some fantastic football today, winning every match on the way to the play off but unfortunatly losing 2-1 for a place in the city final. One of our superstars was even picked as player of the tournament. What a talented team you are.

Year 2 Dodgeball Stars

Our first sporting event of the year was Dodgeball. This group of children represented our school like the superstars we knew they were and worked so hard to prefect some new dodgeball skills. We are very proud of you.

Movement with scarves

This afternoon we have enjoyed dancing to music using scarves , we have learnt various new moves and had lots of fun.

We loved the open top bus!

We loved the open top bus tour of Liverpool today as part of our Geography topic. We recognised lots of local landmarks and loved listening to our amazing tour guide too.

Museum Ancient Egypt

What a super day out! We mummified a body, spoke about what the Ancient Egyptians would have done with dead bodies and went on a scavenger hunt to find information out about the Egyptians.

Working within 20

Some boys and girls have worked incredibly hard to be more secure with numbers up to 10 and then 20. Using practical resources they were able to create 10 in different ways.

Nursery Rhymes

Today we have learnt two new songs, Im a little tea pot and Tiny Tim. We have made spotty teapots this morning using the paint sticks and also explored making tea outside. This afternoon we have learnt Tiny Tim and had lots of fun exploring with the soap and flannels.

Matisse Art

Great work from Year 3 today trying to recreate Henri Matisse’s work. We cut up pieces of paper to make collages.

Prepositions

We looked at prepositions today, focusing what we could change in our sentence accuracy. Some great examples!

Nursery Rhymes

This week we have learnt two new songs, I’m a little tea pot and tiny Tim. We have had fun exploring with the soap and water. We have also been making cups of tea using the tea bags.

Catching and throwing

Practising our catching and chest pass. We also practised our bounce and overhead passes before applying them in a game of bench ball.

My Nightmare School

In PSHE we looked at what a nightmare school would look like. We are very lucky not to have a school like these and we have people around us to keep us safe, support us and help us grow.

Marcy and her emotions

We have been exploring our new character’s feelings and how they have changed through the book. Marcy started off excited for an adventure but quickly changed to fear and worry when it went dark and she reached the cave.

Hands Sign Language

How lucky are we in Y1 to be learning sign language with Hands. We have practiced some greetings this week.

World Boxing Championships

WOW what a way to spend the afternoon! Watching the World Championship Boxing at the arena! 🥊 We even met the Mongolian boxing coach !

Year 3 had a lovely experience this morning designing cakes based on their local area. Lots of great ideas and presenting skills being used.

We had so much fun today eating ice creams, on a bouncy castle, playing party games and having birthday cake! What an amazing day!

What an absolutely fantastic celebration for our schools 150th birthday celebration! 🎊

The children enjoyed playing on the inflatables with their friends , they had a visit to the ice cream truck for some lovely I whipped ice cream and they also played party games with lots of prizes in their classes!

The children finished off the day with some birthday cake and sang happy birthday to Smithdown Primary School. What a lovely day from start to finish. 🎂

Hands Assembly 🖐

Thank you to all of the families who attended Receptions Hands assembly this afternoon. The children have been working so hard for the last 10 weeks and they were absolutely fantastic!

We are so proud of all the effort they have been putting into their signing, singing and dancing.

We hope you all enjoyed it!!

And a big well done to Deny from Miss McNally’s class who worked so hard throughout these sessions with her fantastic signing. She won a love hands jacket – how amazing!!

The Very Hungry Caterpillar 🐛🍎🍐🧁🍭🌱

Today we read “The Very Hungry Caterpillar” – the children worked together in pairs to recall what the caterpillar had eaten on each day of the week.

They also used some of the fruits that the very hungry caterpillar had eaten to make their very own fruit salad that they enjoyed during snack time. 🍎🍐🍊🍓🍉🫐

In the creative area the children were making their own very hungry caterpillars using green and red circles. They made these completely independently- how fantastic! 🐛

CO workshop

We have had an assembly and a workshop this week to inform the children about CO (carbon monoxide), the dangers of it, how it is produced, how it can be detected and what the symptoms of CO poisoning are.

The children got to see the Teddy’s journey throughout our school & then enjoyed a lovely breakfast in the garden!

In groups we created different biomes of our worlds. We thought about, climate zones, temperatures, vegetation and animals that would live in our different biomes.

Refugee week

Last week we had a performance based on the experiences of refugees. It was brilliant performed and we even had a Q&A session at the end.

Pictogram fieldwork!

This morning year 3 have been working hard to collect information for our topic on statistics in maths. We looked out of the windows onto our very busy community to see how many different coloured cars we could see. We then collected the data into a tally chart to turn into pictograms.

Forest School

We have had a lovely time in Forest School club with some of our Reception children and parents and families. We have used natural materials to make journey sticks, played listening games and created dens. Tomorrow-Thursday 26th June is our last session where we will be having a campfire. We “stepped into” some pictures from our new book. We answered some questions, asked our own questions and made some predictions about our new book.

We looked at why our world has different climates and we also explored digimaps to find different temperatures across earth.

DT – engineer visit!

We have loved making our trains last week in Year 5. We’ve built our chassis, adding electrics and tested our locomotives. We were even visited by a local engineer from Stadler Rail Company to help us with our electrics and testing.

Refugee Week

We read a book that helped us understand what refugees are and how they might feel and spoke about the possible reasons for why someone might need to become a refugee.

We have been looking at the text Only One You and sharing where we have come from and where we are now. We have made fish to represent the fish in the story.

In Reception we have been learning all about our school and it’s 150th birthday 🥳

We looked at old pictures of the children from our school – they were all in black and white.

We made a picture of Smithdown P.S to celebrate and printed with sponges using the school colours 🎨

Reception @ The World Museum

Reception had a fantastic day at the museum on Tuesday. We had a wonderful time seeing all of the amazing things – our favourite was the aquarium. The children even spotted Nemo and Dory!

Smithdown Drama

We had AS Creative deliver a super session to link with our 150 years celebrations. Year 3 we’re looking at events through our school’s life, so in our session we focused on WWII. We did freeze frames to represent evacuation, rationing and the blitz. It was a great way to think about the children who would have experienced this event in our school in 1939-1945.

Amazing skills practised by Year 3 today! Continuing with our 150 year celebration, we used charcoal to create an image of our school from the 1960s.

Famous people around our school!

As part of our 150th anniversary, Year 2 have been researching famous people from our local area. We combined this work with our computing topic! We’ve made posters about Natasha Jonas (who went to our school), Tony Bellew, Gerry Marsden, Ali Al-Hamadi, Ringo Starr and Cliff Marshall

Timeline of events

We have worked super hard to create a scaled timeline of events in Liverpool and our school from 1874 to 2025. We added in things like when our school was created, the blitz in Liverpool, boys and girls merged in school and when our local mosque was built.

To celebrate 150 years of our school, Year 1 have made our school using Lego and blocks.

In Year 1, we have been comparing toys from 1874 to now and looking at how they are different.

Smithdown Archives

We went to our “Smithdown Archive” today to look at the log books from Chatsworth Street School. Some of the books are nearly as old as our school so we took extra care looking at them.

150 years!

Our school is now over 150 years old! To celebrate, we are dedicating some work this week to look at our school through time and what events have happened during its time. We started off our week by looking at photos of “Chatsworth Street School” and the area around our school. Everyone was so excited and had lots of questions about our school.

Cyanotype

Year 3 have been exploring artists who use natural materials. Anna Atkins created one of the first books with photographs in it without using a camera! We practised the same technique she did nearly 180 years ago. We used light sensitive paper and natural things we found to create our cyanotype photos.

Chester Zoo

Our Chester Zoo trip was fantastic! We saw lots of interesting animals in the lovely sunshine. We also had a great session with Chester Zoo staff about our UK native species.

We are practicing signs for food names this week in Reception during our Hands time.

Martin Mere Viking day!

We absolutely loved going to Martin Mere for our immersive Viking experience. We took part in weaving, foraging, thatching and defending the village.

This morning we enjoyed using the seek app to find the names of native creatures and plants in our playground. Thank you to Lucy from Chester Zoo – a great start to our workshops!

X2 multiplication practice

We have had boys and girls finding multiples of 2 out on our yard. They grouped objects into 2s and then found the total. They explored so many different ways to show their 2 times tables. Super work!

Earth Day – Recycled Kites

Today we celebrated Earth Day and we made kites today from recycled materials. We loved flying them outside.

We have started to learn sign language in Reception. Today we have been learning signs for colours.

This amazing piece of work was all done at home about WW2! I was so impressed with the amount of knowledge there was about so many different aspects of the war. SUPER WORK!

It has been a busy day celebrating Eid 🥳 we have drawn henna hands, made party hats, played games and enjoyed dancing together.

WW2 Workshop

Today we had a visitor in to teach us about WW2. We trained to become special volunteer police officers and followed commands given in the war. We looked at Erie facts and even had time to role play.
