1273KM have been working scientifically by exploring the question ‘do we need light to see things?’
The children had 5 boxes with a different item in each. They had to peer through the hole in the box and make a predication on what the object could be. When more light was added to the box, some objects could be seen a lot easier than others.
135We have been working hard on our rail engineering project. Over the past couple of weeks, we have created our own locomotives, complete with a frame, wheels, axels and an electrical circuit.

RLMc had a great trip to Croxteth farm today. We saw lots of animals including goats from the Three Billy Goats story. We loved brushing the horse and holding the rabbit and Guinea pig. We had a great day outdoors.

Year 5 had a fantastic time learning about Anglo Saxon and Viking daily life in Martin Mere. We learned how to weave, fight in battle, make a thatched roof and forage for medicine and food in the woods

We had lots of fun with our families at Calderstones Park. We played ring games, had a picnic, fed the ducks, rolled down a hill, explored the playground and looked at different plants and flowers in the sensory gardens. Huge thanks to all families for coming along.

110Wow we have had a great time for our Big Teddy Bear Sleepover! First we started with a super singing assembly with Mrs Naylor. It was fun singing and dancing with our teddies. Then we made our teddies a bed to sleep in. We could not believe what they got up too when we went home. This morning we woke our teddies up with a lovely breakfast.

Earlier in the year, year 5 took part in a project with Primary Engineer and built moving locomotives with an electrical circuit. Today we celebrated each child taking part, awarded awards for best group work and also two boys took home the ‘Best communicator’ award. Well done, year 5!

We used Henri Matisse as our inspiration for our art topic. We used his method of painting with scissors to make our collages.
68What a great start to maths this week. We have made groups of ten and worked on our counting in tens.

In PSHE, we talked about what makes our school a dream school. The children gave answers such as,

From this, we discussed that a nightmare school wouldn’t have the lovely things that Smithdown has. We created posters for our nightmare school. Some amazing imagination was used. 😊
52Year 3 had a great start to their first shared write of the year. We have been learning about imperative verbs, rhetorical questions, adverbs and how instructions are laid out. We put all the new skills we have been learning to the test and used them to create a set of instructions about how to be a mischievous child, based on our reading book ‘Seen and Not Heard’

A group of children from Year 2 represented our school at a dodgeball festival today. Exceptional behaviour and lots of fun had by all!

With guidance our students experimented with lines and shading, making their drawings come alive. The focus on perspective not only enhances their artistic skills but also encourages critical thinking and creativity.

49Year 3 had a great afternoon applying their painting with scissors skills to some Ancient Egyptian paintings. We discussed the pictures and what we could see, using our art vocabulary. We then had the challenge of focusing on a small part of these images and then had to recreate this.
47Today we use glockenspiels and xylophones in our music lesson to play the C triad and the F triad. We played this to Bob Marley’s “Three little birds”.

We are simply blown away by the writing we have recently produced. Our Year 6 classes are so invested in world issues – saving habitats and animals in particular. Have a read of some of the letters we wrote to the Rwandan Government, asking them to help protect the magnificent mountain gorillas 🦍

Author of ‘The late crew’ Rob Ferguson came to visit our school today. Some of us were so excited to even get our books signed by a real life author! We even designed our own alien that we could use in our stories.

Today we having been using different oil pastel techniques (sgraffito, dry blending, cross-hatching and tinting) to figure out which ones we want to use for our landscapes.
56Year 3 had an amazing day at the Liverpool Museum. We gained so much knowledge about Ancient Egypt which will help as we continue to study this topic in our history lessons. Mohammed, Azad and Banu dressed up as embalmers and they mummified a fake Egyptian body. It was a great opportunity for the children to learn all about this and step back in time. 😊
59In English, we are starting a new book. Before the children heard the name or seen the front cover we looked at various clues and made predictions about what it could be about. The children came up with great ideas. Based on the clues, some children thought it was about an explorer who visits different parts of the world. Others thought it was about different habitats. The book will be revealed next lesson! 📜📚🌍
52Year 3 really enjoyed this weeks computing lesson. They all love using scratch to code and create their characters.
50Today we are designing our Diwali lanterns for next week. We have learnt the story of Rama and Sita and thought about why Diwali is celebrated in Hindu religion. We are trying to focus on using Rangoli patterns.
72Year 3 had a wonderful day exploring the museum and looking at the different artefacts from ancient Egyptian history. We walked the length of the River Nile and spoke about the process of mummification. We also watched some of our friends become Pharos!
61Today, year 3 had a workshop based around Diwali. The children enjoyed learning about this celebration. They learned how it called ‘the festival of lights’ and created their own pieces of art that candle lights are placed in. We got to dress up and took part in a traditional Diwali dance.

Year 4 had “the best day ever” in Chester. We experienced life as a Roman soldier and learnt more about the Roman invasion in Britannia.
We have really enjoyed learning about the celebration of Diwali this week. We are very excited to see our lanterns lit for our Diwali lunch tomorrow

62Year 3 had a great P.E. lesson outside. We are making the most of the sunshine whilst we have it. The children had to use their speed and agility in todays lesson and work in teams of 4 to collect the most high-fives. We also had a skipping competition to see who was a top skipper in our class.

Year 6 have been starting a new project on Scratch. Children have begun to create their own space invaders game. Yesterday we focused on laying the ‘foundations’ ready to start coding during the next lesson, children designed a different series of backgrounds in order for a program to broadcast a message.

Huge respect in our class to recognise the soldiers that have fallen in the past. We did a minute silence in the morning and then created amazing poppy art work based on our art topic ‘painting with scissors’ in the afternoon.

This week, year 3 began their gymnastics topic. We discussed different ways to balance using small and big body parts and made these shapes. Overall, a great introduction to gymnastics!
56This week, we worked scientifically by sorting and classifying different types of rocks. We explored the rocks and discussed their characteristics. The children came up with great words such as ‘rough’ ‘bumpy’ ‘smooth’ ‘sharp’
55Today we have loved our class campfire. We enjoyed toasting the marshmallows, creating a s’more and having some hot chocolate. We even had a blast from the past with some children’s songs and rhymes.
62Year 3 had a great workshop this afternoon on how to save energy and how to be NRGenius’s. They had to create a powerful image representing why we use fossil fuels. We learnt all about renewable energy and how these are better for our environment. We ended the session by making a pledge to try our best to save energy. 💡⚡️
Year 3 had lots of fun learning about and talking through different ways we could save money by saving electricity. We learnt the benefits of turning off things we aren’t using and saving money by doing this. We had to create powerful images to show the importance of fossil fuels and why we need them. We then wrote our own pledge On how we will try to save money, well done Genius’s!!!⚡️💡🔦
