Dual Narratives in Y6

Christmas Crafts with parents

Year 6 had a lovely morning today,  making  Christmas Crafts with our parents.

Year 6 Computer Aided Design

This term, Year 6 have been exploring computer-aided design (CAD) as part of their Design and Technology curriculum. Building on last year’s wooden train set project, pupils are now designing and creating their own model cars. They have been learning how to use digital design tools to plan, test, and refine their ideas before bringing them to life.

Sustainability: Planning and designing a Green City

As a grand finale to our Geography unit, we worked together to plant and design a Green City. We thought about elements: renewable energy, living walls, cycle  lanes, allotments, green spaces ….. to name a few!

A Dual Narrative this week in Y6

We have been working on writing our own dual narrative this week. We have done lots of pre-writing work, now we have begun writing our own stories using two characters from Hansel and Gretel.

Mary Anning revisited

We learnt about Mary Anning in Y3, so as we are currently learning about fossils in Year 6 as part of our Evolution and Inheritance unit, today we revisited our learning with a view to presenting our information to Year 3 to help them in their learning journey.

Preparing for writing

Year 6 spent some time yesterday finding out what a dual narrative is: we read an example and identified language and organisational features of the text, We then used our oracy skills to hot seat characters to gain a deeper understanding of emotions, actions and motivation. During our role on the wall work, we came up with some truly mind-blowing words!

Being a Global Citizen

After learning about the rights of a child, we found out about children working in parts of the world without these rights and how they lived their lives, in particular children who work on cocoa plantations. We also refreshed our learning about Fair Trade and what it means for farmers and cocoa producers.

Writing a persuasive letter of support

Year 6 have thoroughly enjoyed this writing activity linked to Hansel and Gretel. We wrote a persuasive letter / a letter of support telling our friends Hansel and Gretel reasons why they should not go into the old woman’s cottage.

Year 6 really enjoyed writing in the role of a character today, we could use some some words we would never normally say as they are not polite! Writing is based on the woodcutter’s wife’s reaction to the children finding their way home after her husband took them deep into the forest to lose them! She is not a happy lady!

We have been finding out about ways in which everyone can reduce their carbon footprint by sometimes, small simple actions which can help our planet.

Years 5 and 6 Play Leaders

After receiving coaching from Coach Craig from LSSP, some of our Year 5&6 children have qualified in PALS – Leading physical activities during break times. They really enjoyed the course and can’t wait to get started!

Year 6 became Mini Medics today!

We had First Aid training and learnt about DR ABC, how to put someone in the recovery position, how to give CPR and we had fun with bandages!

Boys Football Competition

Our Y6 boys did really well today, they were model sportsmen who were great ambassadors for our school AND they qualified for the quarter finals too! Great job boys  👏👏👏

Science: Battle of the Beaks!

We investigated which type of beak we the best at picking up different food sources in science today.Our

’food sources’ represented were: insects, berries, seeds, worms, fish and meat on a bone.  The next step is to look at our results and draw a conclusion about how successful (or not) each beak type was.

Celebrating Diwali – Festival of Light

We really enjoyed our special workshop today learning all about the festival of Diwali. We listened to stories, made  patterns, dressed up and danced!

City Finalists!

How proud are we of our Year 6 girls, they won 6 out of 7 matches and have secured their place in the City Final! Lionesses in the making!

Geography: Endangered Animals

After learning about the WWF status of certain animals, whether they are vulnerable, endangered or critically endangered, we chose an animal to present in poster form including the threats it is facing.

We continued our art unit based around Andy Warhol today by looking at colour and shading.

Year 6 have been writing in role this week and today they took on the role of a friend, giving advice to Rose Blanche  after she told us what she had seen in the forest.

Pop Art

We are learning about Andy Warhol and Pop Art and will be applying the technique to animal art to link with our Science and Geography units of Evolution, animal adaptions and endangered animals.

PE: Basketball Session 1

Year 6 had their first basketball session today. The focus was on hand position on the ball in order to control it, head up whilst moving and running with the ball and to keep the ball at waist height. We also learnt about ‘keeping the ball alive’ and ‘double dribbling.’ We even had attempts at shooting.

Refugee week

Last week we had a performance based on the experiences of refugees. It was brilliant performed and we even had a Q&A session at the end.

Special Friendships

Today, we were so happy to be reunited with a couple of our classmates who had been living in another city and were now back in Liverpool. They were welcomed with cheers, hugs and huge smiles by all their friends. Everyone showed kindness. So lovely to see!

150 Year Celebration

We have been reading the story of Rumpelstiltskin. It is an old German fairy tale that was written many years ago. These children have worked so hard with their writing. I have been very impressed.

Geography: Landmarks leading into OS National Grid work

Our first task today was to name and locate human and physical landmarks within the United Kingdom. Following this, we used the OS National Grid to identify which maps would needed if we were traveling to visit each location.

We took on the role of one of the characters in the short story we are currently reading: Mad Miss Marney. We assumed the role of Kate after her first visit to Mad Miss Marney’s house.

Earth Day: Carbon Emissions

As part of Earth Day, we also started finding out about the carbon emissions from countries and compared to how that stand against the populations.

Edublocks- Python Coding

Year 6 continued to look at using python coding with the focus today being on understanding what variables are and how to create and update variable. Children created code to be able to get a turtle to draw different sized shapes by asking a question ‘How many sides?’ Children inputted different numbers to get different shapes draw on their screen.

Science Week: Biscuit Investigation

Year 6 investigated how long it took a range of biscuits to dissolve in warm liquid and presented findings using graph software.

A new scientist to learn about for Y6

As part of our Science Week work, Year 6 learnt about Ibn Al-Haytham, the man credited with inventing the pinhole camera. As our Lowry portraits were so good, we couldn’t resist applying our artistic skills to this wonderful scientist too.

Edublocks Lesson 2

Children continued to look at using python coding with Edublocks, this lesson we focused on how we can use the repeat loop, colours and movement draw a shape and use that shape to create a pattern. We also looked at how we can use a variables to create different colours to allow a colour change everytime a sequence has been completed.

The Dalmatians are safe once again!

Today we had a visit from Cruella De Vil who wanted to steal all of the Dalmatian puppies, luckily the classes were able to find all 101 of them and saved the school! What an amazing World Book Day 2025.

To accompany our learning about the circulatory system and the heart, we have produced some of our own artwork and posters linked to the topic.

Year 6 continued to look at using python coding with Edublocks, this lesson we focused on how we can use the repeat loop, colours and movement draw a shape. We discussed the importance of using the angles in the turn section to be able to draw different shapes.

International Mother Language Day

On February 21st, it was International Mother Language Day. To celebrate, we have been learning words and phrases in different languages. The children have been fantastic teachers.

Year 6- Edublocks Python Coding

Year 6 looked at what Edublocks is and how python coding works. Children were introduced to how we can code different elements of the program. Children created a program to allow a ‘turtle’ to draw different patterns and change colour.

Biography writing in Year 6

We have been intrigued learning about Miep Gies and the role she played in helping to hide eight Jewish people in an annexe in Amsterdam during World War II but perhaps more importantly, how she was the one who found and kept safe Anne Frank’s diary.

Safer Internet Day: Spotting Scams

We spent some time learning to recognise fake profiles, keeping passwords safe and identifying and knowing how to react to scam emails, pop-ups and text messages.

Another high energy session in Y6 PE today

It was just too cold to go outside today for our next session in our zone games unit, so we made the most of space in the hall and held a benchball tournament. A fantastic way to burn off some energy at the end of the week.

PSHE: Celebrating Differences

We have started our new unit which is all about celebrating differences between people. We are strengthening our awareness of how we all have different perceptions of normal, how we are all different, how some differences we can see and others we can’t and how people who have specific impairments in their lives, can live amazing lives and achieve varying successes.
