Language Support
Language Support at Smithdown Primary School
Together We Grow
At Smithdown Primary School, we are proud of the rich diversity within our community and the many languages spoken by our pupils and families. We believe that every child should feel confident and supported in developing their understanding and use of the English language so that they can fully access the curriculum and thrive in all areas of school life.
Our dedicated Language Support Teacher, Ms Siddiqui, works closely with class teachers to plan and deliver a bespoke programme of support for pupils who are learning English as an Additional Language (EAL).
Our Approach
-
Collaborative planning: Ms Siddiqui works alongside class teachers to adapt lessons and design targeted group sessions that build pupils’ vocabulary, confidence and comprehension across all subjects.
-
Assessment and progress tracking: Pupils’ language development is assessed using EAL Hub and Academy Star baseline tools. Progress is reviewed regularly to ensure that support is responsive and effective.
-
Small-group and in-class support: Children receive focused teaching in smaller groups or through in-class support, depending on their level of English and individual needs.
-
Professional development: Ms Siddiqui shares practical strategies and high-quality resources with staff through training and staff meetings, helping all teachers to meet the language needs of their pupils.
Our Vision
Through this collaborative and inclusive approach, we aim for every pupil learning English as an additional language to:
-
Feel valued and confident as a member of our school community.
-
Develop strong communication skills and academic language.
-
Access the full curriculum successfully.
-
Make excellent progress from their individual starting points.
At Smithdown, we celebrate language, culture and identity. We believe that by learning together, supporting one another and valuing every voice, Together We Grow.
