This afternoon Year 4 have continued to build on their understand of how Pixels are used. Children used a website to recreate an image in pixel form. Children created it on paper first and then used excel to start to recreate their image.

4KM had an amazing morning learning a Chinese dance and carrying the Chinese dragon???!!!

This afternoon Year 4 have been converting a mosaic into a pixel-style image. Children had to work out how they could convert the different sections into a 14 x 14 grid to ensure their design stayed symmetrical, children designed it onto a piece of paper ready to create a digital version next week.

Year 4- Repetition Loops Scratch

Year 4 continued to look at how we can use repeat loops to benefit code. They focused on being able to use a repeat loops to get two separate characters to move in different ways, one moving when the mouse is moving and the other to move by itself and change direction when hitting a wall.

Complimentary Colours

Yesterday we created artwork using a colour wheel to discover complimentary colours. We then created mosaic patterns inspired by Gaudi’s Trencadis technique. The media we used was oil pastel.

Yesterday we used pictorial artefacts to investigate a mystery person. We generated questions and then answered them using the internet. Finally some children were hot-seated in role.

This half term Year 4 have been focusing on what pixels are and pixel artwork in their computing lessons. Children looked at how the amount of pixels can impact the quality of images, how we can use binary code to create different pixel images, explored how to create pixel images and used their knowledge of excel to create a pixel based image of a mosaic that they created.

What was the impact of the Industrial Revolution?

In groups we compared an artist’s depiction of an area in Britain in the 1830s to how it had changed by
the 1890s. We discovered the changes in landscape were due to the Industrial Revolution. We then learnt about 7 key changes and ordered them by importance using a diamond nine activity.

What happened in the Victorian Era?

Using drama and freeze frame we demonstrated significant events/ information from the Victorian Era: Irish families escaping the potato famine, a Victorian classroom, the invention of the Steam Train and living in a workhouse.

What was life like as a local Victorian?

We used freeze frame and role play to show our learning based on the Victorians. This was our final lesson about the Victorian era.

Y4 have been busy classifying animals according to their characteristics. We then used this knowledge in a Carroll diagram

After learning about deforestation, Y4 rehearsed the poem There’s a Rang Tan in my Bedroom. We learned about how forests are being cut down for palm oil production and focused on intonation in performing.

Y4 Dunking Biscuits

Y4 have been working scientifically and explored how many dunks different types of biscuit could withstand in cold water. We recorded the amount of dunks each biscuit lasted. Some even made it to over 50!

Today Y4 explored classification keys. We started by identifying characteristics that separate items. We practiced with liquorice first before applying to animals. Well done Y4!

Rumpelstiltskin

We have been reading the story of Rumpelstiltskin. It is an old German fairy tale that was written many years ago. These children have worked so hard with their writing. I have been very impressed.

This morning we enjoyed using the seek app to find the names of native creatures and plants in our playground. Thank you to Lucy from Chester Zoo – a great start to our workshops!

We have loved learning about the history of our school since it was built in 1874. The past two weeks we have created timelines linked to the school’s History and the city of Liverpool, we have compared inspection reports from 1950 and 1964 with the present and we  created old and new collages of Smithdown\Chatsworth Street school images.

Community as a Superpower

For Refugee Week, we talked about the different communities that we belong to. We also designed welcome baskets for people seeking asylum and refuge. We agreed that working together as a community is a superpower, and spreading kindness makes the world a better place.

Particles in States of Matter

To understand how particles move in solids, liquids and gases, Y4 took to the outdoors to explore their movement using the parachute. We kept the particles tight with a little movement in solids, more movement in liquids to fit the space in a level surface and then we allowed the balls to fly everywhere for gases (this was our favourite bit!)

Y4 kicked of their States of Matter topic by observing dancing raisins. We discovered that all states of matter were featured in this observation and refined our explanations to be more scientific!

Refugee Week 2025

After discussing what a refugee is and why this might happen to people, we thought about what we could give a refugee to help them survive their journey to safety or what we would take with us if we became refugees. The most important message we need to remember is a refugee is a person just like us and not just a label.

Racing Liquids

In Y4 we investigated one of our original questions ‘Are all liquids the same?’ We decided to have liquid races to explore this question. We raced washing up liquid, golden syrup, juice and cooking oil and discovered some are faster than others. We learned the word viscosity in order to describe this characteristic of liquids. We had so much fun doing so!

Special Friendships

Today, we were so happy to be reunited with a couple of our classmates who had been living in another city and were now back in Liverpool. They were welcomed with cheers, hugs and huge smiles by all their friends. Everyone showed kindness. So lovely to see!

In D.T. we made picnic wraps to as part of the school’s 150 years celebration. We analysed different ingredients and then used our cutting, peeling and grating skills to make our wrap using our favourite.

Year 3 & 4 had a wonderful morning celebrating our school’s birthday. We enjoyed some yummy ice cream together!

Thurstaston Beach

We had a fabulous day at the beach! We loved exploring, playing, and learning together.

Gymnastics

Year 4 have been loving their gymnastics lessons. They have been able to recap the balances and moves we learned in year 3. This year, we have started to perform partner balances. This has created a lot of giggles during our sessions. 🤸‍♀️

Representing numbers to 10,000

Our place value topic has started with practical lessons to recap our understanding of representing and partitioning numbers to 1000. This will help us when we begin to look at numbers to 10,000.

What could our new book be about?

The children are very excited about our first English book of year. They came up with some interesting predictions based on clues and pictures from the book. They can’t wait to read it and see if their predictions were correct. 📖🧙‍♀️👧🎒🔑

Coding in computing

Year 4 love using scratch to create their own code. Today, they used copy and paste skills to create sprites of different colours and used coding to make these move in different directions.

Exploring Sound

Y4 have had a brilliant day exploring sound and learning how it is created by vibrations.

Sketching ✍️

In art, year 4 have been practicing their sketching skills in our ‘still life’ topic. We practiced hatching, crosshatching and stippling. The children really enjoyed using the sketching pencils. We then put these skills into action by sketching the fruit in front of us.

Working Together

We have had a wonderful start to the school year. It is lovely to see the children working hard and helping each other. We have also used our home languages to help our friends who are new to English.

We have some musicians in year 4 🎸

Year 4 absolutely loved their first ukulele lesson today. They have a passion for music and different singers/bands. We can’t wait to start practicing songs with our new instrument. 🎶

Sound walk

Y4 took a walk around the school to note different sounds we heard. Mr. Smith got a 7/10 for volume and we enjoyed Mrs. Hollinsworth’s 3/10 radio songs in the office!

Writing

We have been writing sentences based on the story called The Shopping Basket by John Burningham. These children have worked very hard and are very proud of their work.

Cake Sale

Thank you so much for all your donations towards MacMillan Cancer Support. Children had a lovely time – a lot of cake was enjoyed : )

Roman Trip to Chester

Year 4 had a wonderful day at the Deva Roman Experience in Chester. We collected our shields and weapons before stepping back in time to Roman Britain. We walked the streets of Chester and battled with our ‘enemies’ The children learned a lot of new facts about The Romans, including what they ate and how they went to the toilet. The children loved it!

Still Life Art

Today, year 4 began their final piece of their still life art topic. They made contributions to how the still life should be displayed, they felt the objects to add texture and chose their own sketching method. 🌷🍌🍎🎨✏️

Deconstructing a coin purse

Hockey

Year 4 have been loving their P.E. lessons this half term. They have been learning the skills of hockey. We discussed that hockey is an invasion game and the aim is to invade the other teams space to score a goal. To begin, the children have been practising dribbling and controlling the ball to help prevent the opposition from retrieving it.

Reading Pictures

We are reading Into the Forest by Anthony Browne. The children are enjoying looking at his fantastic illustrations and seeing what they can spot. The pictures tell the story and keep us guessing about what happens next.
