The Role of the Governing Body at Smithdown Primary School

At Smithdown Primary School, the Governing Body works closely with the Headteacher and staff to make sure every child receives the best possible education in a safe, caring and inclusive environment.

Our school is built on the values of kindness and respect, and our motto — “Together We Grow” — reflects the way we work in partnership with our families and our wonderfully diverse community. Inclusion is at the heart of everything we do, and we are proud to provide a nurturing environment where every child, including those with special educational needs and disabilities (SEND), can thrive.

The Governing Body plays a vital role in supporting this work. Governors are volunteers — parents, staff and members of the local community — who bring a wide range of skills and experiences to help guide the school’s development. While the Headteacher leads the day-to-day running of the school, governors help shape its vision and hold leaders to account for the education and wellbeing of all pupils.

The Governing Body’s main roles are to:

  • Support and challenge the Headteacher and staff to ensure every child achieves their full potential.

  • Set the school’s vision, values and priorities, reflecting our commitment to kindness, respect, inclusion and community.

  • Oversee the school’s budget and resources, ensuring they are used effectively to benefit all pupils.

  • Monitor progress and outcomes, keeping a close eye on teaching, learning, and pupil wellbeing.

  • Ensure the school meets its statutory duties, including safeguarding and equality.

In short, our governors act as a critical friend — offering both encouragement and constructive challenge — to help Smithdown Primary remain a place where together we grow and every child feels valued, supported and inspired to succeed.
