My name is Jan Ireland and I am the Family Liaison Officer at Smithdown Primary School. I work with parents in an engaging and supportive way. I can provide lots of information to help and support families and can be contacted on 0785 2557623. I can also help with completing forms.

Parent and Toddler Group

A parent and toddler group runs every Wednesday morning 9.00am until 10am.

Come along with your toddler to enjoy playing together, arts and crafts, story time and singing; meet other parents and make new friends.

Why is it good to sing with our babies and toddlers?

  • Singing makes you happy – Singing out loud releases feel- good hormones that make you feel happy and positive.
  • Singing helps you to get healthy – Not only is singing good for your mental health and mood, but research has shown that singing can actually help build your immune system.
  • Singing teaches communication skills – Singing to babies prepares them for communicating. For toddlers singing strengthens their lips and tongues which encourages speaking.
  • Singing helps with brain development – Singing is a great way to build memory. In babies and toddlers, singing helps to build and strengthen important brain connections.
  • Co-ordination – Action songs are a brilliant way to develop your child’s co-ordination, gross and fine motor skills.

During this academic year, we will be restarting many of the activities and courses that Covid restrictions prevented us from running.

.  At Smithdown we are hoping to restart:

  • ESOL classes
  • English conversation classes
  • Reading is fun. This is a 10 week accredited course provided by adult learning whereby parents learn how to support language and the love of books at home by using and creating different mediums.
  • Families Connect. An 8 week save the children course. This is a course for parents and their reception age child to work on the three areas of social and emotional literacy, Maths and English. The parents get resources to take home to continue to implement the strategies at home.
  • Yum,yum yummies cookery and healthy eating course for parents and children in Nursery.

Friends of Smithdown

We also have a Friends of Smithdown group which has been set up to organise events and to raise funds to buy equipment and provide other activities for the benefit of the pupils. Parent helpers at events are very welcome!

We link with many organisations within our community including, Asylum Link, Tesco, St Anne’s Primary School, Granby Children’s Centre, The Greenhouse Project, Granby Development Trust, Picton Children’s Centre, St Dunstan’s Church, Community Food Banks and St Hugh’s Primary School.
